Let’s talk about the top stories in Hollywood this week!

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige surprisingly confirmed that Doctor Strange will not make an appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Taking place “just minutes” after the events of Avengers 4, Far From Home features Peter Parker (Tom Holland) on a vacation in Europe when Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) uses his VFX magic talents to become Spider-Man’s next supervillain. Feige confirmed Doctor Strange’s absence in an interview with /Film. (/Film)

Even though Doctor Strange won’t have a role in the Spider-Man sequel, Feige confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is getting his own sequel. However, Doctor Strange 2 won’t make an appearance for “a number of years.” “It is just a good problem to have when you have too many beloved characters that people want to see more of,” said Feige. Chucky is returning to the big screen in a Child’s Play reboot. Polaroid director Lars Klevberg will take the helm with a script by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury, Quantum Break). It producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith will also be on board. Plot details are currently under wraps at MGM. (Collider)

Idris Elba will play the main villain in Hobbs and Shaw, the Fast and Furious spinoff starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham. Though Johnson and Statham’s characters regularly find themselves at odds, according to Variety, Elba’s character “is the antagonist the duo will go up against,” forcing them to team up. (Variety)

M. Night Shyamalan revealed the poster for Glass, his surprise follow-up to 2000’s Unbreakable. Unbeknownst to viewers of Split until the final scene, Shyamalan bridged his 2000 and 2016 films to return to David Dunn’s story. The superhero film hits theaters January 18, 2019. (Twitter)

The Sopranos are coming back, this time on the big screen. Alan Taylor will direct New Line’s The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel story to the iconic TV series. According to The Wrap, “the film takes place in the 1960s…Several characters from The Sopranos are expected to appear in the film, though New Line would not disclose further plot details.” (The Wrap)

Miles Teller is taking to the skies in Top Gun: Maverick, the much-anticipated sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1986 film. Teller will play the son of Goose and Maverick’s new protege. Top Gun: Maverick, in theaters July 12, 2019, tackles the end of the era of dog-fighting in a world of drone technology. (Variety)

Sony Pictures is creating a film adaptation of graphic novel Skyward from Image Comics. Brad Peyton will direct and executive produce the film. According to Variety, “the movie will follow a woman born just after G-Day [the loss of gravity] who has become accustomed to it, but has come across a dangerous plan to bring gravity back.” (Variety)

Jim Carrey is joining the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog, a hybrid live-action/animated adaptation of SEGA’s classic video game character. Carrey will play the main villain, Dr. Eggman, also known as Robotnik. Carrey’s inclusion in this family-friendly action film “could mark a semi-return to genres that helped him become one of the biggest comedy stars in the world.” (Hollywood Reporter)
